(ORLANDO, Fla.) – Congressman Alan Grayson (D-FL) today applauds the response of his supporters in opposing a proposed U.S. trade agreement. The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) is, as Grayson stated in a recent email to supporters, "a partnership between multinational corporations and their sellout tools in government."

The TTIP features "investor-state" dispute resolution, which permits huge corporations to file lawsuits to prevent government actions that they just don't like, such as health and safety regulations. Similar trade agreements have allowed the World Trade Organization to strike down country-of-origin meat labelsdolphin-safe tuna labels and limits on candy-flavored cigarettes marketed to kids.

Grayson encouraged people to submit comments to the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) regarding the TTIP, and created a webform for people to submit comments. The response was overwhelming. In a little more than 24 hours, 9,625 people took the time to make their opinions known. To put that in context, the USTR received only 113 comments in the weeks before the Grayson Army went into action.

Here are just a few of the comments submitted:

Please, do not sell us further into corporate servitude. – Dale in Redford, MI

The "Partnership" actually is a partnership between multinational corporations and the politicians who prostitute themselves to them. – Susan in Jefferson City, MO

Trade agreements made on behalf of our country should benefit our country, not simply insure profits for giant corporations. – Jean in Fairview, OR

It's about time our government remembers that its sole existence is "for the people" - NOT big business and corporations. – Chris in Clermont, FL

I consider it a betrayal of our sovereignty. – Claudia in Laconia, NH

The Grayson campaign delivered the comments to the USTR on Friday, May 10th, shortly before the comment period on the TTIP closed.
