Grayson Statement in Support of Protest Against Koch Brothers Orlando Summit

(ORLANDO, Fla.) – Florida Governor Rick Scott and Senator Marco Rubio are expected to speak at today’s Koch Brothers-backed “Defending the American Dream Summit” in Orlando. Community groups have organized a protest against the “Nightmare Pair” and their failed agenda. Congressman Alan Grayson (D-Orlando) issued the following statement in support of the protest:

“Unfortunately I am unable to join this important protest in person today. I will be addressing the current crisis in Syria on national TV, and we haven’t worked out a way yet for me to be in two places at once.

“I strongly support the people of conviction who came out today to protest against theKoch Brothers summit. The Koch Brothers, Rick Scott, and Marco Rubio have joined together to tell the tale of their version of the American Dream – one in which the Middle Class no longer exists, the poor have no access to health care, and our children have no public education. That’s not the American Dream. That’s the Republican Dream.

“Democrats in Congress passed the Affordable Care Act (ACA) three years ago to provide each and every American with affordable health care coverage. Health insurance when you’re sick? That’s the American Dream.

“Republicans in Congress have attempted to rob the poor, the sick and the needy of affordable health care by voting to repeal Obamacare 40 times. Senator Rubio has even threatened to shut down the entire government in order to prevent Americans from obtaining affordable care. Preventing people from having health insurance? That’s not the American Dream.

“An important part of the ACA asked states to expand Medicaid coverage to their neediest individuals. States would receive free money from the federal government to help foot the bill. Ensuring that your poorest citizens have access to health care? That’s the American Dream.

“Though Florida has the second highest rate of uninsured individuals in the nation, Republican leaders like Governor Scott and Senator Rubio have refused to expand Medicaid to one million needy Floridians. Denying health care coverage to those in need? That’s not the American Dream.

“A free, public education for each and every American is the foundation of our nation. Funding our schools, paying our teachers a living wage, providing the best learning experience possible for America’s future leaders? That’s the American Dream.

“Governor Scott wants to privatize our school system. He wants to slash school budgets, demonize teachers, and marginalize poor students. Making our public school system Public Enemy Number One? That’s not the American Dream.

“The American Dream is about opportunity, justice and equality for each and every individual. It’s not about who can pay more, who can hurt more, and who can repeal the most laws. It’s time to tell Rick Scott, Marco Rubio and their buddies at Koch Industries that the American Dream isn’t about cash and corporations. It’s about people. Teachers and students. Doctors and patients. Communities. It’s about you and me. This is our American Dream. And we’re taking it back.”
